Using easily readable clothing labels is also a safety measure to protect customers with allergies or medical conditions that prohibit them from using certain fabrics. Although clothing labels may be viewed as a simple addition to a garment, they serve far more functions than their appearance may indicate.

Flag Clothing Label

The simple clothing label of the 1950s has been replaced by a more complex and complicated one that provides a wealth of information and data. One recent addition to clothing labels is barcodes and quick response (QR) codes, a type of two-dimensional barcode. Barcodes and QR codes have made it easier for retailers to track their inventory and sell to customers.

Types of Clothing Labels

Since the beginning of their use, clothing labels have become an important part of a garment because they directly communicate with customers. When a customer is planning a purchase, the clothing label has the customer's full attention and determines the quality of a garment. Clothing labels are an essential selling tool that performs like a sales associate.

Main or Brand Label

The main label is the brand-identifying label containing the brand name and logo. In the world of advertising, brand identification is the first step in the process of building brand loyalty and establishing a clientele. Once a customer develops a relationship with a brand, they feel a sense of confidence and self-satisfaction. In addition, a well-designed and planned brand label helps certify a product and ensure its quality.

Size Label

The size label is a crucial part of clothing labels since it lets customers know if the garment is appropriate. They are a mandatory label for all garments, whether a piece of clothing is branded or not. Size labels vary according to gender, customer age, region of the world, and type of garment.

Size Labels

Care Label

Care labels cover a wide spectrum of information regarding a garment and may decide whether a garment will be purchased. Modern fabrics, which cover a long list of materials, require special care to preserve their quality and appearance. For example, some fabrics can be washed while others require other forms of cleaning. The care label outlines how to wash, bleach, dry, launder, and iron a garment.

A Care Label

Composition Label

The composition label describes the materials and fabrics used to manufacture clothing. It is usually expressed in percentages, with the most prevalent fabric labeled first with the highest percentage. The composition label usually appears next to or part of the care label since the fabrics used to produce a garment influence its care.

"Made In" Label

Since many companies produce their products offshore, especially in the clothing industry, the "made in" label has become an important identifier that customers examine closely. It displays the country where a garment has been made, which can say something about the quality of a garment.

Price Label

One practice that has radically changed in the last few years in the garment industry is the price label, which used to have dollar and cents numbers. With the development of barcodes and QR codes, most clothing does not have a numbered price. Aside from the price of an item, the barcode contains additional information, such as the number of the item and its location.

Barcode Label

Flag Labels

Flag labels are attached to the seam of a garment and look like a flag waving. They can serve several purposes, from laundering instructions to providing fabric composition.

Clothing Label Pricing

Certain companies specialize in the production of clothing labels. As a result, their prices vary according to the type of label, from brand label types up to flag labels, with size labels being the least expensive. Additionally, the price of the production of labels can vary according to the number of labels being produced.

Woven labels are the best choice of label due to their professional quality and durability. However, a select few labels can only be printed and not woven. Careful research to find acceptability and planning are key factors when designing a label. A clothing label creates an image for customers and can build customer loyalty.

How Clothing Labels are Folded

There are six basic ways that a label can be folded. They include end fold, hot cut, loop fold, book fold, Manhattan fold, and miter fold. The choice of fold depends on the type of garment, the designer's desires, and the garment's use.

  • End Fold – With an end-folded label, the left and right sides of the label are folded and sewn to the garment.
  • Hot Cut – A hot cut clothing label is not folded but is sewn on all sides.
  • Loop Fold – A loop-folded label is folded in the middle and sewn through its fold.
  • Book Fold – A book fold is similar to a loop fold, with one part of the loop being shorter and the garment's size at the bottom of the longer loop. It is sewn at the top of the loop.
  • Manhattan Fold – With the Manhattan fold, the top of the fold folds over the bottom fold and is used on sleeve hems.
  • Miter Fold – The miter fold has two tails at either end of the label that is folded at an angle such that they stick up and out. It is a label that is commonly used on jackets and robes.
